Bottled at 4.2% ABV, Temperance by Portobello Road, has been crafted especially for gin-fans who are looking to moderate their intake of alcohol yet don't want to compromise on flavour.
Temperance, which means moderation, was created by Portobello Road Gin's award-winning co-founder, Jake F. Burger and has been distilled using the same nine time-honoured botanicals that comprise Portobello Road Gin's signature London Dry and Navy Strength. Jake developed bespoke techniques and added additional ingredients, such as naturally high mineral content water, botanical hydrosols and one or two secret ingredients to ensure the spirit harbours the intensity of flavour, texture and depth demanded by the modern drinker.
The resulting flavour profile is instantly weighty, with viscosity and a pleasant acidic sharpness. In the mouth the citrus, floral, and particularly the winter spice notes are more pronounced than the nose would suggest, theneventually give way to juniper and pepper.
A serve made with 50ml of Temperance mixed with 200ml tonic water holds just 0.8% ABV, while a classic 'equal parts Negroni' made with Temperance instead of Portobello Road London Dry will be almost 50% lower in alcohol and contain just 1.1 units.
A Call for Temperance
The first in our series of cocktails using Temperance spirit is a deliciously fresh concoction at just 3.7% ABV. Try it for yourself at home:
40ml Temperance
15ml Fino Sherry
20ml Lemon juice
10 ml Sugar syrup
Whites of 1 egg
Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, shake with ice, remove ice, dry shake and then fine strain straight up in a coup glass.
For a zesty finish, grate some lemon zest on to the top of your finished cocktail.
Petit 75
We've put a Temperance twist on the French 75, to make the Petite 75.
Petite in name and abv, this deliciously decadent drink is just 1.3% abv (0.21 units.)
50ml Temperance25ml Freshly squeezed lemon juice15ml Sugar syrupEisberg non-alcoholic sparkling Ice Lemon or Maraschino cherries
Shake Temperance, lemon juice and sugar syrup with ice in a cocktail shaker, strain into a flute, top with Eisberg non-alcoholic sparkling and garnish with a twist of lemon peel or a maraschino cherry.
White Logroni
Temperance; a drink designed to be used in place of gin or vodka in any of your favourite mixed drinks or cocktails. At 4.2% alcohol it contains just one tenth of the alcohol of our classic Portobello Road Gin, which means a Negroni like this one contains a mere 1.28 units (14.4% abv) of alcohol, about half that found in our classic Negroni.
In this drink we have also subtly changed all the other ingredients, so instead of sweet vermouth we use the peerless French aromatised wine Lillet Blanc and instead of the familiar red hue of Campari you will see that we have used the clear bitter aperitif from Luxardo. A Negroni like no other you would have tried before but one that we think is delicious.

Method:
Build over ice & stir in a rocks glass, garnish with a wedge of orange. Enjoy!
Nose: Intensely aromatic with bold notes of juniper, cinnamon and citrus, reminiscent of gin but not entirely representative of it, a suggestion of citrus, and the mildest hint of grass and wildflowers.
Palate: Instantly weighty, with viscosity and a pleasant acidic sharpness, in the mouth the citrus, floral, and particularly the winter spice notes are more pronounced than the nose would suggest, they eventually give way to juniper and pepper.
Finish: The flavour lives long on the palate and lingers seductively in the nose, even twenty, thirty seconds after a sip is taken the flavours and characteristics bounce around the palate, as the flavour eventually subside, mouth-watering, salivating sensations persevere.
