The first time Jim Barry walked on the soils of Lodge Hill in 1977, he knew it was a special site. It now produces two of Jim Barrys most famous wines The Lodge Hill Riesling and The Lodge Hill Shiraz. At 480 metres, the Lodge Hill vineyard, situated on the eastern ranges of the township of Clare, is one of the highest points in the valley. Jims original intention was to devote the entire Lodge Hill vineyard to premium Riesling. However, while he was pottering around with his trusty shovel, digging here and there, he discovered a very different soil profile on the small north-facing slope. Warmer than the rest of the property, Jim decided it was the perfect place to plant Shiraz. So in essence, there are two vineyards within the one. The Shiraz vineyards soil consists of about 40-50 centimetres of rich, chocolaty loam over rock, consisting of almost vertical sheets. The cracks between the sheets have been filled with soil, providing passage for the vine roots and free drainage the ideal environment for low-yielding Shiraz vines.

History
Founded in 1959, Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. Jims son Peter became managing director in 1985 and today Peters children Tom, Sam and Olivia are the winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Voted 2020 Winery of the Year' at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards they produce highly acclaimed and award-winning wines.

Wine has been flowing in the Clare Valley since 1851 and is an integral part of the culture. It is one of Australias most prestigious premium wine regions, most famous for its Rielsing and Shiraz. A small area, accounting for less than 1.5% of Australai's total wine production

Vinification Details
Grapes are de-stemmed before passing through our sorting table which removes almost all MOG(Matter other than grapes) such as petioles, leaf and stem fragments. The grapes are gently crushed, which allows a small percentage of whole berries to pass through to the fermenter. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel fermenters with heading down boards which submerge the skins in the fermenting must. This moderates the temperature of the fermenting skins or cap, whilst gently extracting colour, flavour and tannin. Pump overs are conducted twice per day with a rack and return, where the fermenting juice is drained completely away before being pumped back over the skins, occurring each day early in the ferment. Fermentation generally takes 7-9 days before being pressed with al of the pressings returned to the free run. Malo-Lactic fermentation occurs in tank before the wine is racked to oak for maturation. The wine is then aged in French oak for 12 months.
