History
At the beginning of the 19th century when Antonio Leo started to vinify grapes grown on his 20-hectare estate, Masseria Monticello. In the early 20's estate passed to his grandson Paolo Leo, who built his own winery marking the beginning of Feudo Paolo Leo. The 4th generation Leo family replanted the vineyards with Primitivo and the fifth built a modern winery in San Donaci. Today the winery has a state of the art bottling line and over 500 French oak barriques and is run by the 6th generation.
Regional Information
The grapes are selected from low-yielding vineyards (50 yeasr old) near Sava and Salento in Puglia, \Alberello Basso\ vine training method (bush vine). Clayey soil.

Vinification Details
In mid August, when the grapes have reached perfect maturity, a special technique called il giro del picciolo(the twisting of the stem), is applied. The grapes are left on the plant for approximately 12 days, and lose around 25-30% of their weight in water, concentrating their flavors before harvest. Approximately 25% of the wine is aged for 12 months in French and American barriques.
