Acanthus leaves decorate many Morris designs and they take on a central role in his Acanthus pattern for wallpaper. This classical motif lent itself well to repeating patterns and Morris believed that the larger-scale designs particularly suited smaller rooms, creating a more restful atmosphere compared to denser, smaller patterns. The use of soft tonal shades further enhances the design, infusing it with a sense of gentle movement. Acanthus is showcased here as a luxurious printed velvet.
