Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2022 is primarily sourced from dedicated parcels of old vines (some aged over 70 years) located within the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation in the northern Côte de Nuits. This cuvée represents a blend of several high-quality climates, specifically drawing fruit from the Les Jouises and En Billard parcels, which provide a combination of heavier clay soils for depth and cooler microclimates for freshness. This vintage is a blend of 100% Pinot Noir. The estate is managed with organic and biodynamic practices, and this cuvée is crafted with the same meticulous attention to terroir as the domaine's premier cru wines, utilizing a significant proportion of whole-bunch fermentation (roughly 50%) to enhance aromatic lift. It was aged in French oak barrels (approximately 30% new) to preserve its fresh, vibrant fruit character while adding a refined structure.
Florence Heresztyn and her husband Simon Mazzini took over the estate from Florence's parents and uncle with the 2012 vintage and have made great progress since then. The wines are now certified organic and biodynamic. This is a fine estate in the very centre of a famous village. Florence's grandfather arrived as an agricultural worker from Poland in the 1930s, and gradually built up the estate. This 'Village Wine' is blended from 5 different parcels located on the northern and western sides of the village. The wine is described as 'Vieilles Vignes' (old vines) as many are over 65 years old. As all wines at this estate, it matures for 15 months in barrels before bottling.
Tasting Notes: The 2022 vintage of this wine shows the distinctive notes of spice, mineral and iron that Gevrey wines often show. There are some soft oaky notes too, and ripe black fruit tones. This is a wine which will last well for 10 years.
Serving Suggestion: Pairs best with robust dishes such as roast duck, wood pigeon, mushroom risotto and cheese dishes.
