History: In the 1860's Alphonse Vigier strived to find solutions to the collapse of his business due to plague ravaged the French vineyards. He contacted a young wine consultant Charles Serres Delie to find land outside of France. Serres travelled to Spain and discovered a region that reminded him of the best terroirs: Haro in Rioja. Initially, he bought grapes as a commodity to sent back to France, nevertheless, soon he participated in a revolution that would produce a new winemaking style in the Spanish region.
Regional information: Our vineyards are located in the Rioja Alta sub-region, mostly at south-east of Haro. Finca El Estanque was one of the frst vineyards in Rioja to be espalier-trained, increasing leaf surface exposure and achieving better ripening in all grape varieties, thereby improving cluster aeration and allowing for more environmentally-friendly growing practices. The vineyards have a surface area of 60 hectares and mostly chalky-clay soils with a high gravel content. The average age of the vines is 24 years old.
Vinification: Fermented in concrete vats. After destemming and gentle pressing, the juice macerates on the skins before fermenting for approximately 15 days at a maximum temperature of 32 ºC.
Ageing: 36 months in a combination of American and French oak barrels, then a further 36 months ageing in bottle.
