Adding to a bedside diffuser or putting just a couple of drops on the underside of your pillow (remembering that it may irritate skin and eyes) can help you to harness lavender’s sleep bringing abilities.

Lavender essential oil’s ability to promote a sense of calm in some people also makes it a popular choice for those experiencing stress and anxiety.

Added to a massage oil, its soothing smell is ideal for helping you wind down after a tough day. It can also provide a moment of peace if inhaled during a busy commute or ahead of a stressful meeting.

Thanks to the linalool and camphor compounds in lavender, a little diluted oil mixed into your moisturiser and applied to skin may help to keep bugs at bay.

Like citronella, lavender is believed to deter those pesky mosquitoes and may also repel wasps, ants, moths and flies.

Lavender oil often finds its way into skin and haircare products, and not just because it smells great.

Lavender oil appears to have a cleansing effect and as such may help to improve the appearance of spot prone skin.
