Alicante Bouschet is one of a few grape varieties to have red pulp as well as skin; historically it was used a blending grape to deepen the colour of wines. It thrives in the hot dry climate of the Alentejo, east of Lisbon, where it makes delicious, deeply coloured, full-bodied wines. This example is made exclusively for MandS by Jo o-Maria Portugal Ramos and Donzilia Copeto. They ferment a small portion of the grapes in old granite lagares for added complexity. Jo o-Maria recommends paring it with local Perna de Borrego, lamb shanks. Best enjoyed within 3 years of purchase.
