Over six decades, he carved a career using all forms of media, including drawing, sculpture and printmaking. Born 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France, he was originally a legal clerk. He began drawing at an evening class before moving to Paris in 1891 to pursue his vocation as an artist. It wasn't until the beginning of the twentieth century when he had his major creative breakthrough. A visit to Saint-Tropez inspired him to paint a bright, light-dappled canvas. He continued this style, which became known as Fauvism. Some of his most noted pieces happened during his later years.
